A fatal crash in Hillsborough County Sunday morning shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 75, according the Florida Highway Patrol.

  • Tow trucks dispatched to pick up vehicles
  • Honda truck failed to stop and hit, killed driver standing by road

The incident happened shortly after 4 a.m., just south of Big Bend Road.

According to troopers, three vehicles were pulled over for racing along the interstate. Tow trucks were at the scene, loading the vehicles, when a Honda pickup truck failed to move over for the patrol cars located on the shoulder of the interstate.

The pickup truck hit tow truck driver Troy McGuire, 48, while he was standing by the road, before colliding with the tow truck.

The McGuire died at the scene, troopers said. He lived in Ruskin.

Southbound lanes of I-75 were closed for hours while troopers investigated the crash. All lanes have since reopened.
