Malik Davis is still running. And for the longest time he was chasing history.

The senior running back for Jesuit has been running with his legs, his arms, his mind, and his heart, for four years.

And on Friday night, a simple 30-yard touchdown run for Davis was one of the biggest moments in Hillsborough County football history.

On that run Davis passed former Sickles standout Ray Ray McCloud (now a sophomore at Clemson) to become the all-time leading rusher in Hillsborough County history. McCloud's record was 5,765 yards. Malik Davis needed 196 yards to break the record. Davis rushed for 214 yards and 5 touchdowns - in the first half.

Davis currently has 5,974 career rushing yards and will become the first ever 6,000-yard rusher in county history his next time out on the field.

When Davis scored that touchdown, he gave the ball to the official, put his head down, and ran off the field with the class and confidence of a true champion. It's something we won't get to see much longer.

When Davis was a freshman, he played mostly defense and special teams; Davis went to head coach Matt Thompson and said, "Coach, I can run the ball if you need me." But, of course, Malik never complained or said another word to anyone about it. He just wanted to do right by his teammates.

Team first. Team always.

So it came as no shock to anyone that after Jesuit's game was stopped in the middle of the second quarter on Friday against Robinson to honor Davis' achievement, he wanted it to be all about his family: his mother, his friends, his coaches, and his teammates.

"This is something I could not have done without my teammates," said Davis. "We have built such a bond that anyone would want with their team. This is so special because we share it together."

"This is a Jesuit record," said Jesuit head coach Matt Thompson. "Malik is the most deserving kid because he knows he does not do this without his teammates blocking, handing the ball off, or even the defense getting stops and putting the ball back into his hands."

Malik Davis sought out every teammate after his team's 56-3 victory on Friday night to thank them for their support and for being his teammates.

Then Malik Davis stood on the field, under the lights on Alumni Field at Corral Memorial Stadium. It was his night. It was his moment.

Malik Davis is still running. But now, he has history chasing him. Good luck trying to keep up with number 20.
