The driver accused of leaving the scene of a crash that left a 17-year-old girl dead has been arrested.

  • Driver arrested in Wednesday's hit-and-run crash that killed teen
  • Nikolaos Konstantinou, 56, arrested at Clearwater home
  • Troopers say he left crash scene, tried to file insurance claim on damaged car

Following a tip from an insurance adjuster, the Florida Highway Patrol located and arrested 56-year-old Nikolaos Konstantinou.

Ashley Perdomo, a senior at Hillsborough High, was struck by a vehicle on Hillsborough Avenue Wednesday night. She had just left work at a grocery store and was trying to get to her bus stop. She died at Tampa General Hospital.

Officials said she was not in a crosswalk when she was struck.

According to troopers, Konstantinou struck Perdomo, did not stop and drove to his Clearwater home. He then called his insurance company and filed a claim to get his 2002 Hyundai repaired, authorities said.

When that insurance adjuster came to examine Konstantinou's car, he called authorities.

Konstantinou, 56, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail. If found guilty, Konstantinou could face a possible 30-year jail sentence.

Perdomo's family placed a memorial at the site of the crash on Thursday. Perdomo was described as a popular student who had a 3.3 grade point average. Hillsborough High School will honor Perdomo before tonight's home football game.

What's even harder for her family to understand is how someone could hit the teen and not stop to help.

"That shows the type of person he is," said Ashley's brother, Bryant Perdomo. "Inhumane. That means he doesn't have no bit of compassion. He crashed her and left her like that. Maybe she would've been alive if he would've called."
