A young comic book writer from Port Richey will receive a huge honor in the last weekend of October: Evie Dunn, 9, will be featured at MegaCon, the Southeast’s premier comic book convention, when it comes to the Tampa Bay Convention Center October 28-30.

  • Evie Dunn, 9, lost her dog two years ago
  • She published a comic about an idea she had to get her friend back
  • Comic available online now

Evie Dunn, 9, is her own main character in “Fetch: An Odyssey."  Her book about a little girl that loses her dog and wants to get him back from the heavens.

Evie lost her own dog, a a Labrador-Ridgeback mix named Rosco, when the 4-year-old dog was put to sleep in 2014. He suffered from a twisted stomach when Evie was 7 years old.

She remembers the day vividly.

“My mom and my dad coming home and saying he wasn’t coming home,” recalled Evie. “And I was really furious that we couldn’t get him back.”

When Rosco was put to sleep, Evie had been studying Greek Mythology in school, and took the lessons literally.

Her dad, Martin Dunn, a professional comic writer himself, says Evie came up with a dangerous plan full of adventure to steal Rosco from the Gods.

“It was actually, originally an idea of like, 'we should do this,'” said Dunn. “'We should go get a ticket. Go across the ocean, find Mt. Olympus, climb Mt. Olympus, because it’s real. My teacher told me it was real.'”

Of course, Evie herself didn’t cross any oceans or climb Mt. Olympus, but her main character did in the pages of her first published comic.

Dunn worked with artists and story editors for two years to bring the story to life.

As for Evie, she's just excited to share her story.

“Well…” Evie said. “You can’t have the future if you don’t have the past.”

Those are wise words for a 9-year-old. Evie and her comic will be featured at MegaCon, and by then the second book in the series “Fetch: An Odyssey” will be out for select convention goers.

The original comic is available online, and will be available at Yancy Street Comics inside Gulfview Square Mall by Thanksgiving.
