A large fire swept through a Tampa discount store Monday night.

  • Fire broke out at Big and Deals Supercenter on Hillsborough Avenue
  • Fire crew to three-alarms
  • No injuries

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, a massive fire broke out just after 9 p.m. at the Big and Deals Supercenter located at the corner of Hillsborough Avenue and N. 40th Street.

There were no injuries reported.

Firefighters were at the scene fighting the flames into the early morning hours.

Fire officials said the three-alarm fire spread quickly as clothing and furniture burned in the store. Flames were seen throughout the structure and shooting into the air.

The roof eventually collapsed, causing extensive damage.

Four employees who were working to close the store for the night noticed smoke coming from a back room, Tampa Fire investigators said. When the employees opened the door, smoke poured out.

The smoke and flames quickly spread from there, the employees said.

Officials have not said if the store is a total loss. An insurance adjuster is expected at the scene on Tuesday.

Even if the store reopens, it likely will be shutdown for several months until repairs are made.

So far, no cause has been given for the fire.

Fire investigators are expected to continue an investigation today.
