Tampa Police on Monday confirmed the identity of a body found Saturday after a boating accident.

  • Police say boat hit sandbar, man jumped off boat
  • Body found off Courtney Campbell Causeway ramp
  • Victim ID'd as 34-year-old Mario Lucero Saenz

Authorities said the body recovered Saturday from the waters off the Courtney Campbell Causeway is the man who was reported missing from a rented boat on Friday afternoon.

Police identified the victim as Mario Lucero Saenz, 34, of Tampa.

Authorities said Saenz was in the rented boat at 3 p.m. Friday with his fiancee, Erika Intriago, when the boat hit a sandbar.

He jumped off the boat to push it off the sandbar but went underwater. The boat drifted as he attempted to remain afloat, resurfacing twice. Intriago tossed a life vest to him.

However, he did not resurface a third time, and his fiancee called 911. Dive teams from several agencies responded to search for the man Friday.

The search resumed Saturday morning with dive teams from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Tampa Police, Coast Guard, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Tampa Fire Rescue.

A body was recovered at 10 a.m. Saturday near where the man went missing.
