The state has terminated its school readiness contract with a St. Petersburg daycare and learning center.

  • State terminated contract with Happy Workers Daycare
  • The learning center was previously put on probation for violations
  • The center could permanently close in a month

Happy Workers Daycare was put on probation with the state last month after a number of violations. The daycare was missing information from its paperwork, like background checks on their workers.

State officials found more violations this week, prompting the contract termination with the 87-year-old facility.

Lindsay Carson, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition, said, "Of most concern to me, is the fact that there are violations related to criminal background screenings. Where there was a teacher who didn't have a criminal background check and obviously we've gotta keep these kids safe."

The learning center has the right to appeal the decision, but if all goes as planned, Happy Workers' doors could close permanently in a month.
