President-elect Donald Trump has nominated former rival Dr. Ben Carson as his secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

  • Trump said he was "thrilled to nomiate Carson"
  • Carson was previously one of 16 GOP candidates who challenged Trump for the presidential nomination

In that role, Carson would oversee federal housing policy and tackle urban issues.

Trump initially offered the job to Carson last month.

A press release from the Trump transition team says the former neurosurgeon's upbringing in Detroit and treatment of patients from urban areas prepared him for the cabinet position.

Trump praised Carson, saying he shares his vision for urban renewal and economic revival.

Carson had previously said he was not interested in serving in a Trump administration.
