Things have changed recently at the intersection of Shell Point Road and 24th Street northeast in Ruskin.

Carolyn Henderson said the new way to drive through the area has led to a lot of horn-honking.

"Sometimes the person that's going straight... They'll stop even though they want to turn, and they'll let you go," Henderson said. "And all the time the person behind you or the person behind them is bumping the horn."

Before November, it was a three-way stop. Everybody stopped, looked for cross traffic, then pulled through when it was clear.

Now, it's only vehicles on Shell Point Road that stop.

"There needs to be a light there, or everybody needs to stop," Henderson said.

Hillsborough County hopes this is just an adjustment period. Crews put a lot of work into the transition from an all-way stop to what is there now.

They have added message boards telling drivers of the new configuration. They also replaced existing stop signs and cleared away overgrown trees, weeds and shrubs near the intersection to make the signs more visible to drivers.

The next phase of the transition of the intersection is enforcement. The Sheriff's Office will be out there for the next two weeks during the peak morning and afternoon times to watch traffic and see how drivers are adjusting to the new configuration.

New traffic studies are also underway. Those will finish by the end of the month.
