If city leaders have their way, Union Street in Brooksville could be getting renamed to Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

  • Union Street in Brooksville to be changed to Muhammah Ali Blvd
  • Residents say it's an inconvenience
  • City to vote Aug. 15

Notices about the rename were recently sent to residents living on Union, including 88-year-old Edna Willis.

Willis says she's been living on the quiet street since 1964, and isn't crazy about the plan.

“I would say that I’d rather not have it changed, if possible,” Willis said.

The heavyweight champ passed away in June. Ali has no connection to Brooksville, but some city leaders feel that doesn't really matter. He's an icon, they'll tell you, and was an important activist during the civil rights movement.

City council members are expected to vote regarding the propsal on August 15. They want to allow enough time to hear from residents.

Christina Lackner, also a Union Street resident, isn't looking forward to the address change either.

“I would have to change everything,” Lackner said. “That's my main issue with it really. You have to call the doctor, you have to call everybody and change it."

If the rename plan is passed by the City Council, it will take about 30 days to make the change.
