A large hole has opened under a Holiday home. Pasco County officials say the home is in danger of falling in.

  • Depression is approximately 25-30 ft wide; 10 ft deep
  • Homeowner out of state and has been notified
  • 3 surrounding homeowners notified; recommended evacuation

The hole is up to 35 feet wide and up to 15 feet deep but it is growing. The county says it can't call it a sinkhole until geologist come in and examine it.

Early Monday afternoon Roger Bowman and Christian Mccallister were doing weed and pest control on the home on Genesis Avenue when Mccallister noticed something unusual.

“I was looking down on the ground and as soon as I walked around there was about a foot of it just fell right in front of me and I was like whoa this isn’t normal,” said Mccallister.

So Mccalisster called over Bowman.

“We’re looking at it another foot fell in, then another foot fell in, we said we better call 911,” said Bowman.

Bowman said he called the homeowners, who are currently at their other home in New York, to break the bad news.

“I talked to her and she was pretty hysterical,” said Bowman.

"It's horrible. It's horrible,” said Susan Halstead, a relative. “I mean, she lives on a fixed income. I know she didn't have insurance so I mean, it's horrible for her."

The county said it is notifying homes within a 100-foot perimeter. Douglas Alexander just bought a home near three weeks ago.

“It’s happening right here, it’s a little too close for comfort, I literally live on the other side of this house, down four houses,” said Alexander.

Katrina Sherman and her roommate, Ken, live in one of several houses located within 100 feet of the hole. Officials told them it might be best for them to leave.

"Just in case. It's right next to my daughter's bedroom,” said Sherman.

The American Red Cross is putting two families who evacuated up in a hotel. Another family is staying with relatives.

However, ultimately because the hole is on private property it will be on the homeowner to make repairs.
