The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay got a surprise visit from Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence Tuesday.

  • VP candidate, Mike Pence visits Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay
  • No reference to controversial Trump comments

Hispanic Chamber of Commerce member Nathan Penha said Pence talked taxes and cutting red tape. He did not, however, mention Donald Trump’s controversial comments referring to some immigrants from Mexico as "rapists" and "killers."

"He didn’t address anything specific regarding the Hispanic community or fixing what Mr. Trump has been saying," said Penha.

A recent Bay News 9/News 13 Florida Decides exclusive state poll says 61 percent of non-Cuban Hispanics would vote for Hillary Clinton, 26 percent would vote for Trump.

Penha says the visit with the Chamber could have addressed more issues.

"Obviously, this is a political move, I’m sure they found out it was a Hispanic chamber next door and they figure, 'you go take care of that,'" said Penha.

"It would have been nice to at least get his opinion on certain things, specifically the Hispanic community and, again, not generalizing Hispanics."

While Penha says the visit was exciting for some, others need more.

"I think we’d have to see a significant changes in terms of at least from the verbal, the public verbal comments before I think there’s significant support," said Penha.
