Following a scathing series by the Tampa Bay Times last fall, entitled Failure Factories, education officials across the state are beginning to take action.

Winning Reading Boost is a new 36-step program that will begin in August. Volunteers are asked to spend one or two hours a week helping children improve their reading and gain confidence.

The elementary schools benefiting from the program include: Campbell Park, Melrose, Fairmount Park, Lakewood and Maximo.

Volunteers for the program will join a team of three teachers, 15 students, parents and other concerned community members in an effort that is “designed to complement the classroom curriculum.”

Those interested in getting involved are encouraged to contact Jim Martin, the community engagement coordinator for the program, at volunteer@coe.ufl.edu or at (727)798-0327
