It's a Tampa culinary moment that has been years in the making.

  • Goody Goody reopens in Tampa
  • Original restaurant in Tampa open in 1925, closed in 2005
  • Restaurateur Richard Gonzmart brought back the iconic Tampa eatery

An oldie, but a Goody Goody has returned.

Goody Goody opened its doors Tuesday morning at its new location at 1601 Swann Ave. in Tampa's Hyde Park area.

A Tampa institution which originally opened in 1925 on Florida Avenue on the edge of downtown Tampa, the restaurant closed in 2005.

Restaurateur Richard Gonzmart purchased the Goody Goody rights and resurrected the restaurant, known for its "secret sauce" Pox burgers, shakes, desserts and breakfast. Gonzmart's team created the original tile that was in the eatery and he salvaged an original Goody Goody sign from a junkyard.

Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn was among the throng at today's 7 a.m. opening. But he didn't beat Tampa's Mike Smith, who was camped out at 4 a.m. He ate three burgers and took two home.

"It's one of the things that has made Tampa so special to so many people for so long," Buckhorn said. "Goody Goody is one of those iconic brands, it's been part of our DNA for generations."
