Officials in Manatee County have voted to honor a local tennis legend by renaming the court he spent so much of his life on.

  • Brian McAllister, 47, died in February after battling cancer
  • McAllister coached tennis at his alma mater for 19 years
  • Now, Manatee High is renaming the tennis courts to honor his legacy

Brian McAllister coached the tennis team at Manatee High for 19 years. In February, the 47-year-old died after a battle with cancer.

After he passed, the Manatee County School Board voted to rename the tennis courts at King Middle School in Bradenton to honor the longtime coach.

Loved ones say he didn't just teach there, he learned.

McAllister grew up playing on the courts of his alma mater before passing his knowledge on to the next generation of competitors.

McAllister's wife, Kara, says even months after her husband past, people still come up to her to share their memories.

“'Your husband made such an impact on my son when he played at districts,'" she said, quoting the accolades of a teammate's parent.

Family, friends and even the family dog can go to reminisce at the Brian P. McAllister Courts.
