Family, friends and fans will hold a candlelight vigil tonight for Miami Marlins pitcher and former Alonso High star Jose Fernandez.

The vigil will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the school's baseball field.

Fernandez and two other men were killed early Sunday in a boating accident off Miami Beach. Fernandez was 24 years old.

Fernandez was 15 years old when he settled down in Tampa after his fourth attempt to flee Cuba. He spoke no English and didn’t own any baseball gear. Through family friends he wound up at Alonso and became a star high school player, leading the Ravens to the state championships in 2009 and 2011.

Fernandez was selected in the first round by the Marlins in the 2011 draft. He reached the majors by 2013 and was National League Rookie of the Year. Fernandez was an All-Star in 2013 and 2016.

Fernandez is being remembered today also in Miami.

An event is being held today at Marlins Park for Fernandez, then from 5 p.m. to midnight, there will be a public viewing at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Miami.

A private funeral is being held Thursday.

The Marlins have announced plans to retire Fernandez's jersey number 16.
