The Citrus County Sheriff's Office announced Saturday an opening for a new public service officer.

According to the Sheriff's Office's website, Public Service Officers (PSO) "supplement the sworn deputy sheriff force by handling specific calls for service not requiring use of law enforcement authority." Duties may include investigating traffic accidents, assisting in traffic control, investigating and reporting on vandalism and certain thefts, enforcing parking violations, and other routine duties.

Potential applicants must be 25 years of age and must pass a background check. They must also submit a medical clearance form.

For more information, call Jim Cernich at 352-249-2801 or visit sheriffcitrus.org and click on "Volunteer Services."

A new training session for public service officers will be offered in February.
