When many people think about eating healthy, they usually believe it’s too expensive.

But experts said that is not true.

“As a whole, it’s not more expensive,” said nutritionist and manager of Nutrition S’Mart Amber Turner.

That is something that Joe Osmani, the owner of Joe’s Market, agrees with.

“Eat fresh, that’s the best way you’re going to save,” said Osmani.

Experts said there are ways to eat what’s good for you without spending too much cash.

Here are some tips:

  • Buy in bulk. Prepackaged items tend to cost more.
  • Clip coupons and do your research before you head out, a lot of stores match prices and that could save a few bucks.
  • Try going vegetarian at least once a week. That way, you’ll avoid the costs of meat. And going without meat once in a while is actually good for you.

“You give your body a little break when you go meatless,” Turner said.

If prices at the traditional grocery stores are giving you heartburn, try mom and pop shops and Farmer’s Markets. They have lots of fresh produce and since it’s locally grown, they don’t have all those shipping costs.

“So that’s where you’re going to save and it is going to be a lot cheaper that way,” Osmani said.

Buy your fruit while it is in season. And if it is too expensive, swap the fresh berries for a frozen bag. Nutritionists said it is usually cheaper, they last longer and are nutritious.

When you eat healthy, experts said you willl cut down on your food budget by reducing portion sizes and you wont buy as much of the junk food at the grocery store.
