Art and literature are coming to life in St. Petersburg this weekend. Soft Water Studios in downtown St. Pete is hosting the 3rd annual "Fantastic Ekphrastic."

Ekphrastic comes from a Greek word that means "a written commentary on a visual work of art."

A collection of unique and varied artwork will come together for a unique and rare performance.

"It's almost like an art prom, because it's where all of the groups of artists get to come together and participate in this one, unified performance," Soft Water Studios owner Carrie Jadus said.

Local writers have studied the different pieces and have created their own stories, poetry and plays that will be performed in front of an audience who will then judge the performances.

Studio owners and event organizers hope the event will raise awareness about the importance of art and literature.

"I think people don't realize when they look at art how every single person has a different experience with it, and if you see it from the perspective of a writer, it'll make you look at art differently," Maureen McDole with "Keep St. Pete Lit" said.

"Together all of this talent in one room and all the performers who are immensely talented bring all of the pieces to a new level. It really is a concentration of the Bay area's most talented people every year," Jadus said.

All proceeds from the performances help "Keep St. Pete Lit" promote the local literary arts community through classes, programs, and festivals.

There are shows scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, and 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Saturday.
