Spring training starts today at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, and fans should expect some changes.

  • Enhanced security measures added to Steinbrenner Field
  • Officials warn fans to arrive early for games
  • Yankees take on Phillies today at 1:05 p.m.

The Yankees, along with other teams in our area, are recommending that everyone heading to the games today leave a little earlier.

Major League Baseball added enhanced security measures to Steinbrenner Field. Yankee officials said the new policies are similar to those at Raymond James Stadium and suggest that guests get to the field early to make sure you have enough time to get through.

Steinbrenner Field has been revamped with a new main entrance, new shops and places to eat and new seats.

Wands will be used on all guests coming into the stadium, and large bags will not be allowed in — only small, clear plastic bags.

Officials also said anyone with anything suspicious is subject to searching.

Officials say the new policies should have a minimal impact on the fan experience.

"We're expecting it to move smoothly, and we're hoping everyone gets here early and enjoys the new stadium ... by getting here early, that'll be good," said Tony Bruno, senior vice president of Yankee Global Enterprises.

"We're not anticipating that it's going to be a tremendous burden for our fans, and we're hoping it will be efficient and they have the patience and recognize safety is the most important thing for our patrons."

The Yankees will take on the Phillies today at 1:05 p.m. Tickets were still available Friday morning.
