Volusia County is looking for a few good deputies, and they're willing to help students pay their way.

The sheriff's office says the application period opened Wednesday for the deputy sponsorship program.

The program helps economically-disadvantaged residents who want to go into law enforcement.

The program covers all of the costs for attending the Basic Law Enforcement Academy at Daytona State College, including cost of tuition, books and lab fees.

While attending the academy, selected candidates get a full time job at the sheriff's office as a special worker. The pay is $10/hr.
