Hundreds of smiling children were at the Clearlake Middle School in Cocoa on Saturday for the 14th annual Back to School Giveaway.

The event gave school supplies to eager students who need them most.

  • Nearly 2,000 students in Brevard were given school supplies Saturday
  • The event has been going on for 14 years
  • Businesses throughout the community donate supplies and funds

Nearly 2,000 kids and their parents packed into the Clearlake gym, gearing up for the new school year, receiving new backpacks, school supplies, even books to take home for free.

“Some kids don’t have anything, and for them to give it away for free -- is just inspiring,” local student Zavriana Bennett said.  Bennett has been coming to the giveaway for three years.

Brevard school district has nearly 37,000 kids on free or reduced meals -- that’s close to half the kids in the school district.

“I come from a background where I've been throw lines that give out school supplies myself," said volunteer, Nacey Clark "So I’m glad im taking the time to give back. It feels good."

The Brevard School Foundation couldn’t have pulled the day off so successfully without help. All of the supplies were donated by companies in the community.

“You can see the smiles on the kids faces, and I know its getting them excited for school and starting them out with a positive image," added Clark. "Just look around at all the smiles, its just wonderful."

Students in the Brevard County school district will head back to school on August 10.
