There’s a baby boom at Discovery Cove.

Five baby bottlenose dolphins were born at the park within one month, according to a news release.

  • 5 baby bottlenose dolphins were born in 1 month
  • Each weighed about 35 pounds
  • Baby dolphins will be monitored around the clock

Each calf weighed about 35 pounds and measured about 43 inches in length.

“An animal birth is a very special time for our team, and having five babies at once is remarkable,” Disney Cove animal trainer Gina McDaniel said. “The last time we had this many new babies was 2009, so this is an exciting time for our dolphins and our animal care team."

Four of the dolphins who gave birth were first-time moms, park officials said.

The five baby dolphins are Kona, a female born Aug. 3; Titan, a male born Aug. 6; Nero, a male born Aug. 7; Star, a female born Aug. 14; and Storm born Sept. 2. According to the park, Storm’s gender has not been determined.

The baby dolphins will stay close to their mothers for a while. Officials at the facility will continue to monitor moms and babies around the clock. Data will also be collected from the dolphins, including respiration rates and nursing, which will then be shared with zoo facilities around the world.

If you’re visiting Discovery Cove in the coming weeks, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the baby dolphins. However, the park has not announced when the dolphins will be seen on a regular basis.
