Universal Orlando is seeking a trademark on the use of “Virtual Line” for its theme park attractions.

Universal City Studios, LLC, filed a Jan. 4 request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The application states the company is seeking the trademark for “downloadable software for managing and reducing wait times for amusement park, theme park and water park attractions.”

This comes as Universal Orlando is set to open two new attractions--Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon and Volcano Bay--which would utilize “virtual line” technology.

In the case of Volcano Bay, guests will be given a wearable device (TapuTapu) that would allow them to virtually wait in line at one attraction, while enjoying other parts of the park. The device would then alert guests when it’s time for them to ride.

Universal Orlando hasn’t shared too many details about its virtual lines. However, it’s likely visitors would be able to reserve times via a mobile app or in-park system.

The Jimmy Fallon ride, which opens April 6, would be the first to feature a virtual line.

Volcano Bay, Universal Orlando’s water theme park, will have its grand opening on May 25.

Universal’s new system is likely to draw comparisons to Walt Disney World's FastPass+ system, which allows guests to reserve times for up to three attractions at a time via its website or My Disney Experience app.
